La-Verne King

Judge King was appointed a District Court Judge in May 2019 after practising as a lawyer for 30 years and holds both a Family Court warrant and Youth Court designation.  Judge King is based in Whangarei and sits principally in the Family, Youth and Crossover courts but also undertakes circuit work throughout the Nothland/Te Tai Tokerau area.

Judge King has strong links to the tribes within Te Tai Tokerau and in particular to Ng?ti Kahu ki Whangaroa and the tribes within the Muriwhenua area.

Prior to her appointment, Judge King was appointed a member of the Independent Panel reviewing the 2014 Family Justice Reforms by the Minister of Justice.  She was also one of the foundation trainers for Te Korimako Legal Education Programme which provides training to frontline workers from the not for profit and Maori tribal sector working with parents and whanau whose children have come to the attention of the Ministry for Children, Oranga Tamariki.
